Silver-medalist was not the same athlete in the heats! Over-age controversy spoils youth athletics in Delhi

National Youth Athletics Championships will be starting on 10th March in Patna, Bihar.

It was the 400-meter boys' final of the under-18 state Youth Athletics championship in Delhi.

After the completion of the final race, the bronze medalist lodged a complaint that the silver medalist was not the same athlete to have run in the heats due to overage!

The bronze medalist in his complaint has written, ‘He is overage and is not in the final race. Someone else ran in his place,” the bronze medallist said in his official complaint to Delhi Athletics. The athlete who competed in the final wore the same bib as the athlete who ran in the heats.’

After receiving the official complaint, Delhi Athletics has started an investigation. Reacting to the allegations, Delhi Athletics provisionally upgraded the complainant to the silver-medal position.

While speaking to The Indian Express, the secretary of the Delhi Athletics Association Partha Goswami commented, “We are looking into the matter of how the bib was swapped and also about the overage allegations,”

Parth also said that there was an inquiry initiated to check if the gold-medal winner was overage as he failed to produce a birth certificate. The team for the upcoming National Youth Athletics Championships starting on 10th March in Patna, Bihar, will be selected on Sunday.
