Somdev Devvarman moves to Delhi High Court against AITA before its election

The players have also made the government a party to the case, alleging that the ‘(Sports) Ministry has never once made efforts to ascertain if AITA is in compliance with the Sports Code

Blaming the All India Tennis Association (AITA) for violating the Sports Code, India’s former number-one ranked singles player Somdev Devvarman and former doubles specialist Purav Raja have dragged the national governing body to the court days before its scheduled elections on 28th September.

In a petition filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday, the two players alleged that the AITA had violated several provisions of the Sports Code. According to them, the violation includes the 'lack of seats for athletes in all the important positions like Central Council, General Assembly of AITA. The players have alleged that AITA has not made any system that can help eminent sportspersons of outstanding merit to represent them in the Central Council of the General Assembly.

The former players are also aggrieved with the ‘no’ reservation of seats for athletes in the Executive Committee and the lack of any mechanism whereby athletes are elected from the Central Council of the General Assembly to the Executive Committee.’

They have also made the government a party to the case, alleging that the ‘(Sports) Ministry has never once made efforts to ascertain if AITA is in compliance with the Sports Code and has turned a blind eye to multiple patent violations.’
