Southgate says he is not worried about Spain

England manager Gareth Southgate spoke to the media ahead of the Euro Cup final. The English coach is confident that he can win the title, despite the difficulties that Spain presents.

On England:

“Everyone is fit, which is great, but that is not the norm for a final. We are excited about the challenge. It is clear that the team has improved in recent weeks, showing extraordinary character and resilience. I must say that it has been a pleasure to work with them every day on the training ground. It has been a great working environment and we now have a fabulous opportunity to really achieve what we set out to do from the moment we left Qatar a little earlier than we would have liked.”

What message did you send to the players?

We haven't had a lot of time on the training ground, but we've had a number of meetings trying to assess the opposition and determine the best way to play against them. Our messages haven't really changed over the six or seven weeks we've been together - we've had a long-term vision and we've always broken it down into smaller parts.

Is it England's time?

We have good experience in big games and I think at the moment there is no need to tell the players too much, they don't need motivation for a game like this; it's about making sure the small details are right, as small margins decide these games and we have to make sure we are on the right side of them. I don't believe in fairy tales, but I do believe in dreams.

What do you think of this Spain?

I'm not too worried about Spain. We know how they play. They press well, with intensity, they are a balanced team and they keep possession very well. But in the last two games we have shown a great version and we hope to repeat it tomorrow. They have a very clear way of playing, a very settled team, they press very well with intensity, like all Spanish teams they keep possession very well. Especially in the last games we have kept possession very well. We are showing our true self, the version of ourselves that we wanted to show in this tournament.

What would the title mean for England?

We know what it would mean to us as a team, the hard work that has gone into it, not just this group but the players who have been with us for the last six or seven years and have played a huge part. The staff that we have with us has been a great team effort and all those people have helped create the culture that we have and we would love to give them all a special night again tomorrow.
