Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar bagged the gold medal in Chula Vista, USA, with a jump of 8.29 meters.
Murali, currently 24 years, won a gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Competing in his second event of the season, the long jumper was just 0.07 meters away from his personal best of 8.36 meters.
China secured the second and third positions. Ma Weidong leaped 7.99 meters to claim silver while Huafeng Huang leaped 7.61 meters to claim bronze.
The qualification standard for World Athletics Championship 2023, which was held in Budapest in August, is 8.25 meters. In spite, Murali’s leap was over it but it was not considered as the tailwinds were above the permissible limit. Maximum permissible wind speed is +2 m/s but Sreeshankar’s effort came when the speed was 3.1 m/s.
Sreeshankar had a jump of 7.94 meters at Bengaluru earlier this month. He was the holder of the National record with a jump of 8.36m. This was surpassed by Jeswin Aldrin with a jump of 8.42 m at the second Indian Open Jumps Championships in March.
