Stand at athletics stadium named after Amiya, starts over-speed equipment-based training to clock below 10 seconds

Amiya Mallick realizes advice from Glenn Mills did not suit him and decides to continue with Aryio Taiwo

This Odisha sprinter was considered to be one of the country's biggest hopes in the sprint in around 2016 after creating history with a record-breaking timing of 10.26 seconds in the 100 meters. Already before this Odisha sprinter drew the attention of the Indian athletics fraternity when he toured Jamaica and trained under legendary track & field coach of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Glen Mills for a couple of weeks.

But in the last seven years scenario has changed. A couple of sprinters like K.S Pranav, Gurvinder Singh, Amlan Borgohain, and V.K Elakkiadasan have emerged who all have covered the 100-meter distance below 10.30 seconds. The Odisha sprinter however has been a back bencher, courtesy several obstacles as well as the lack of financial support. He hardly received financial assistance from the government, except Rs 30 lakh before touring Jamaica and for his trip to USA to training under USA-based Nigerian coach Taiwo Aryio. Then he was severely attacked by Dengue last year, hospitalized for 10 days, and returned to track even with the weakness. Amidst the situation, Amiya won the gold medal in 100 meters in Indian Grand Prix and a bronze medal in 200 meters.

The stand at Dutee Chand athletics stadium has been named after another sprinter Amiya Mallick. He expressed deep regards to the founder of KIIT & KISS Dr. Achyuta Samanta for naming the Athletic Stand.

The 30-year-old sprinter however did not sound much elated with the stand named after him. Rather he has set focus for a come-back and Asian Games is going to be his target. He already has won three silver medals in the 100 meters in the first three Indian Grand Prix events this year. But he did not sound satisfied at all. He aims to reduce the timing to below 10 seconds as the qualification mark for the Asian Games is 10.19 seconds.

Amiya said over the phone from Bhubaneswar, "I got silver medals in all three Grand Prix clocking 10.66 and 10.52 seconds. But the qualification timing for the Asian Games is 10.02 seconds. So, I have already started training to reduce to the below 10 seconds."

Amiya has begun 'over-speed' equipment-based training to run below 10. He explained, "It is called 'over-speed' training where you will be pulled forward at the beginning of the speed session it will help you to develop the 'assisted speed'.

When asked whether he has plans to go to Jamaica to train under Glen Mills again before Asian Games, Amiya replied, "First of all, I will need big funds. More importantly, during my training in Jamaica, I was injured. This was cured after I took advice from my coaches in Odisha. So I realized the pieces of advice from Glen Mills anyway did not suit me. Rather the training method advises for the recovery phase from USA-based coach Ariyo Tawo were more suitable for me. I am taking online coaching from him. I am also planning to take part in a few competitions in Europe before Asian Games following advice from Tawo."
