The Munich City Council has announced plans to rename the street adjacent to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena stadium in honour of the phenomenal German footballer, Franz Beckenbauer. This is a tribute aimed at celebrating the remarkable legacy of the late football icon. 

However, along with the street name the city has announced plans to build a statue of Beckenbauer outside the stadium alongside his fellow footballer Gerd Mueller.

The renaming signified that Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, which is set to host the Champions League final in May 2025, will officially be located at "Franz Beckenbauer Platz 5" — a fitting tribute, as it also reflects the iconic midfielder’s legendary shirt number. This honour further solidified Beckenbauer's lasting influence on German and global football.

Dieter Reiter, the mayor stated that -  “Naming a street is the highest honour that the city of Munich can bestow posthumously and a sign of the deep respect and appreciation that we have for Franz Beckenbauer”. 

Franz Beckenbauer, affectionately known as ‘Der Kaiser’ for his commanding presence in the field. 

His influence on the sport, both as a player and later as a manager, remains unmatched in the history of football.

The legendary player won the World Cup both times as a player as well as a coach. When the Munich-born player was with Bayern for almost 13 years he significantly sealed three European Cups and four German league titles under his name. 

The mayor continuing his statement said - 

“With his sporting successes and his commitment to football, he has left a lasting mark on Germany’s sporting landscape. His calm, humorous manner and his way of expressing himself will forever remain part of the Munich attitude to life.”
