'Sultan of swing', Akram reveals poor fitness as the reason for Pak setback

Frequent changing of chairman of PCB causes scare amongst management and team members

Babar Azam’s team is under heavy scrutiny from former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram following their disgraceful seven-wicket loss to India in the ODI World Cup on Saturday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Akram, known as the 'Sultan of Swing’ during his playing days, also cited that lack of proper fitness is the primary reason of Pakistan's disappointing show against the Rohit Sharma-led team. Moreover, their vanguard, Naseem Shah missed World Cup 2023 due to an injury which is an unfortunate development for the Pak team.

“I am concerned about the fitness of these players. Now there is no fitness test. When Misbah was the coach and selector, he used to get the Yo-Yo Test and other tests done. A professional cricketer should undergo a fitness test at least once in a month. If you won’t do this, you will face this (defeat vs India),” Wasim Akram said in a Pakistan TV show.

He further said, “PCB has seen three chairmen in the last 3 years. This created a scare among the team members and management about whether they would be part of the next series or not. From 154 for 2 and then 191 all out was really, really disappointing."

India in a dominant display maintained the winning streak against their arch-rivals Pakistan, which led to widespread celebrations among millions of fans all across the globe.

This match scripted history in the ODI World Cups as India extended their perfect 50-over record against their neighbors to 8-0.

India is set to play Bangladesh on October 19 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune and Pakistan will play Australia on October 20 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
