Sumit Antil: From the darkness of despair to shining glory

At just 17, Antil's life took an unexpected turn when a tragic accident cost him his left leg, shattering his dreams of becoming a wrestler and serving in the Indian Army.

Sumit Antil emerges as a beacon of the javelin. From the quiet streets of Khwra, Sonipat, and Haryana, to the grand arenas of global athletics, his journey is nothing short of extraordinary.

On Tuesday Antil clinched the Gold medal again with his 69.50 m long throw in World Para athletics. He also holds the current world record, in his event with the throw of 73.29 meters.

At just 17, Antil's life took an unexpected turn when a tragic accident cost him his left leg, shattering his dreams of becoming a wrestler and serving in the Indian Army.

Once, while speaking to Hindustan Times, Sumit divulged, “I stayed at the hospital for 53 days and, my mother stayed with me throughout the 53 days. She motivated me from time to time. You know, a lady who lost her husband when her son was seven years old. I can't even express, what she has gone through mentally.”

Amidst the darkness of despair, a flicker of hope ignited within him as he discovered a new passion - javelin throwing.

The first time he threw around 35m. His childhood friend, Mohit, stepped forward, sacrificing his career to stand by Antil's side.

Sumit remembered that he learned a thing on the road to success. That is the spirit. He always learned to say ‘we’, not ‘me’. He repeatedly said while talking to the media that he is blessed to have a friend like Mohit.

Antil also honoured prestigious awards including the Rajiv Khel Ratna and Padmashree. His record-breaking performances on the global stage, including the Para Olympics and World Championships, cemented his status as a sporting icon.

"Sports completely helped me in my mental health, like, when I work out, I just feel relaxed and that I have done something", Sumit concluded.

His story serves as a reminder that with courage, perseverance, and unwavering support, no challenge is insurmountable.
