Before their crucial ISL Cup final on Saturday at the Salt Lake Stadium against Mohun Bagan Super Giants, former India captain Sunil Chhetri sent a message to their fans, thanking them for their unbridled support.
Chhetri, who emerged as BFC’s saviour yet again, in the semi-final against FC Goa by scoring the crucial fixture-winner, was overwhelmed by emotion ahead of the ISL final tonight and took to social media to share his thoughts on the incredible fan support that he and his teammates have received throughout the season.
"I know a lot of you cannot be here, but don't for one minute forget that it is you who brought us to this point," Chhetri wrote in an Instagram post.
“We’re lucky to be loved the way we are, and before things kick off, I just wanted to say that we love you too."
Chhetri’s loving sentiment was echoed by BFC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who reminisced and spoke fondly about his long association with the city. “As you know, my journey as a professional footballer started here, and I was very lucky to be getting opportunities to play matches from the beginning. I am grateful for the journey," Sandhu stated in a pre-match conference. League Shield winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant finished on top of the table this season with 17 wins in 24 matches.
While they lost the first leg of their semi-final tie against Jamshedpur FC, the multi-time winners delivered under pressure by beating their opponents 2-0 in the return leg, sealing their spot in the ISL final.
