Tamim Iqbal Announces retirement before Champions Trophy

In 2023, he announced his retirement from international cricket, only to reverse it within 24 hours after Bangladesh’s prime minister intervened.

Bangladesh's former opener and captain, Tamim Iqbal, has officially bid farewell to international cricket. On Friday, Tamim took to Facebook to announce his decision in Bengali, stating, “My chapter in international cricket is over.”

Tamim’s journey wasn’t without drama. In 2023, he announced his retirement from international cricket, only to reverse it within 24 hours after Bangladesh’s prime minister intervened. However, he was later excluded from the World Cup squad, drawing public criticism from captain Shakib Al Hasan, who called his behaviour "totally childish.”

In his heartfelt post, Tamim added, “I have been away from international cricket for a long time. That distance will not be bridged.”

With over 15,000 runs and 25 centuries, achievements unmatched in Bangladesh cricket, Tamim leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Expected to return for next month’s Champions Trophy, he instead chose retirement.

Since his ODI debut in 2007, followed by T20Is the same year and Tests in 2008, Tamim’s illustrious career includes 70 Tests, 243 ODIs, 78 T20Is, and the rare feat of scoring centuries in all three formats.

This week, selectors met Tamim to explore the possibility of his return for the Champions Trophy. However, the southpaw decided to call it a day, saying, “I have been thinking about this for a long time. Since there is a big tournament like the Champions Trophy ahead, I don't want there to be discussions surrounding me again and the team's focus to be disrupted. I've given myself time. Now, I realise that the time has come.”

Currently, Tamim continues to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, focusing on domestic cricket in the twilight of his playing career.
