The anguished opening batsman claims his selection in the Ranji final was not an accident or favor, but due to batting consistency in CAB Super League

Sumanta says his biggest gain amidst the failure and frustration was continuous inspiration from the team's captain, coach and Anustup Majumder

He had to go through a lot of criticism in the last four days. Questions were raised on his selection in the first eleven. He was in Bengal's 18-member squad throughout the Ranji Trophy this season but made a debut in the final of this prestigious tournament against Saurashtra. He is Sumanta Gupta, the 32-year-old batsman from Barisha Sporting who had to face ire from a section of the city's cricket enthusiasts, and a section of the media after he failed to deliver, scoring only 2 runs in the final that was convincingly won by Saurashtra for the second time. Sumanta was so agonized that he even did not have lunch after the match on the day. While speaking to Parallel Sports on Sunday night, Sumanta said, "I admitted I failed completely to deliver. I could not stand up in crisis. I should be blamed for that. But I was hurt when I heard that a section of cricket enthusiasts raised questions about my selection. They have not gone through the statistics I have been maintaining for the last five years. That is the only reason I was selected in Bengal's 18-member squad for this Ranji Trophy. I have scored nearly four hundred runs including an unbeaten 214 against Paikpara in the CAB Super League this season. I had four consecutive centuries in the same Super League two years ago. I have been within the top five run-scorers."

Sumanta explained he had taken mental preparation after the team management confirmed him that he might be played in the final and as an opening batsman by watching videos of Jaydev Unadkat, Chetan Sakariya. He commented, "I saw their bowling videos. I knew they would deliver the least percentage of 'lose balls'. It is also true that I have never played as an opener in either the club cricket or in Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy I have been participating since 2018. But I believe that I will have to bat at any position according to instructions from the coach and captain. It was a dream assignment, making a debut in the Ranji Trophy finals. So, I was not nervous. Still, I failed to perform. The moisture on the pitch was a little more than my expectation. The ball that forced me to return to the pavilion came in and swung away the off-stump. But I should not mention this as an excuse. Ultimately I failed to be the man in crisis, like Anustup Majumder, or even Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Porel who stood up in our first innings."

Sumanta divulged he has taken a lesson from this failure. He said, "I want to rectify, prove myself as the 'man in crisis' for Bengal in any major competition, especially in Ranji Trophy. I make my statistics stronger and want to get into Bengal side next year and put some major contribution so that dream comes true."

However, Sumanta did not forget to mention the biggest gain amidst the failure and frustration was the continuous encouragement from the senior players of the team. He stated, "senior players like captain Manoj-da, coach Lakshi-da, and Anushtup-da encouraged the newcomers in the team in such a way that I cannot describe. It was the biggest gain for me."
