The goalkeeper-turned-striker appears as the highest scorer in the CFL Second Division

He scored 12 goals in seven matches in the Coochbehar League in 2021.

He is Swarnadeep Sangma, a 19-year-old footballer from a village named Garopara in Coochbehar. The CFL Premier Division, if continues without the service of mediocre foreign footballers in the next few seasons, will also witness the emergence of this striker from Bengal after Sahil Harijon.

Swarnadeep has been the highest scorer in the CFL Second Division this season with 12 goals in 12 matches, helping Adamas United Sports Academy to finish as the champion and get promoted to the First Division next season.

Interestingly, the striker's career began as a regular goalkeeper. He was one of ATK's sub-junior (under-13) and junior team’s (under-15) regular goalkeepers. Swarnadeep remembered, “One of the coaches at ATK, Altaf Ahmed sir changed my position. He noticed my height was short for the goalkeeper’s position.”

However, Swarnadeep’s journey was not easy, especially during the lockdown period after the Covid-19 pandemic. Like all other footballers, Swarnadeep was also released by ATK, and for the next two years, the striker did not get an offer from any club.

He revealed, “I am grateful to Somnath Das, the coach of a local football coaching camp named Disha Football Academy. I became depressed. I though my football career was over. but, Somnath sir was the man who continuously motivated me, forcing me to continue training. I traveled almost 15 kilometers every morning from my home and continued training. Not only that, He gave me ample time to improve my shooting, heading, speed-work, and endurance. Even he asked the defenders to offer resistance and taught me to get past them and score. I did it continuously for around six to seven months from the end of 2020 till the middle of 2021.” He also received constant support from his father Dipendra Sangma, a school teacher, and other family members. The result of his hard work also was vivid. He scored 12 goals in seven matches in the Coochbehar League in 2021.

Swarnadeep also expressed gratitude to Ranjan Bhattacharya, the Technical Director (TD), and his coach Amit Ghosh. Ranjan Bhattacharya played a crucial role in bringing Swarnadeep to Adamas United Sports Academy last year.

The footballer stated, "I never thought I would obtain the opportunity to play in mainstream football. It was Ranjan sir who brought me and inspired me a lot. Amit sir, our coach also takes a lot of care all the time.”

Amit Ghosh commenting on Swarnadeep explained, "He has all the qualities to establish himself as a striker of the future. He has an impressive burst of sprint, powerful shooting, and the most important aspect is his calmness. He started as a wing-half. But following an injury of the team's striker I asked him to play in the striker position before one match in the League and since then he did not look back."

Swarnadeep is ardent fan of Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema. He often follows their style especially, “I follow their finishes and off-the-ball movement.”

The striker who is now aiming for a call-up in the Bengal team for the Santosh Trophy next season dreams of donning India shirts ultimately.
