The inspiration of an unsung hero gives Mouma a rebirth and motivates the paddler to dream of a national title even at 39

Supermom Mouma says she wants to deliver her best in the national to fulfill the hope of her coach and family members

Mouma Das, the five-time senior national champion, gold medalist in Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, and the Arjuna Awardee Indian table tennis player seems to bear the same tenacity even at the age of 39. She could not pick up a table tennis bat for three-and-half years since 2018 after having given birth to her daughter, Adriti. Being a Supermom, Mouma returned to the board for the first time and stole the limelight after reaching the final of the senior national championship and losing to Sreeja Akuli.

Mouma who is presently preparing for the forthcoming senior national championship, scheduled to be held in Jammu from 20th March revealed that her rebirth with the bat after three-and-half years has been possible due to continuous inspiration from an unsung hero in the Bengal table tennis fraternity. His name is Debabrata Chakrabarty.

Mouma, speaking to Parallel Sports stated, "This will be my second senior national championship as a mother. I have put on weight after giving birth to Aditri. My endurance level is also a little low. Still, I get motivated when Debabrata sir inspires me. I cannot describe how he encourages me every time. I have been practicing at his coaching center Belgharia Azad Hind Sangha for the last four-five years. Whenever I go to the club he never allows me to sit, and pushes me to practice incessantly. Debabrata uncle has promised me he will reach Jammu if I reach the finals. This was beyond my expectation and I feel it is a great encouragement that will drive me to deliver my best in the upcoming national championship."

Mouma added, "Jayanta Pushilal was my first mentor and teacher. I cannot forget his contribution to my career. But I should say Debabrata Chakrabarty gave rebirth of paddler Mouma Das. While returning to the board after three-and-half years I felt several times that I should quit now as I would not be able to regain my best. But it was Debabrata uncle whose constant inspiration and guidance steered me to show determination and concentration."

Mouma had also a lot of praise for her family members, especially her husband Kanchan Chakrabarty, and her office. She added, "I could not have returned to the board after a three-and-half-year break if Kanchan and all other family members would have supported and taken care of my daughter."

Debabrata Chakrabarty when contacted had all his attributes to Mouma. He revealed, "I was not a professional paddler. Even I was not intended to become a professional coach in the future. Being an employee of PNB at the IIT Kharagpur branch for around 19 years I started coaching following an intense study and observation before guiding the IIT table tennis player. But due to job pressure, I had to stop coaching in 2008. Then I returned to Kolkata, met Mouma in 2013, and following her inspiration and encouragement my coaching resumed at Azad Hind Sangha club."

Chakrabarty whose student Rishaan Chattopadhyay became champion sub-junior and cadet national championship in the under-11 category last year, admitted, "Mouma had also helped a lot when I was developing the infrastructure in the club. She always supports me. Her determination and zeal even at this age is my treasure, and inspiration for the other students at the club."
