Aman still remembers how Sushil Kumar inspired him and advised about the techniques to develop the game.
Who is Aman Sherwat?
Aman Shewarat is a new sensation in Indian wrestling. He is the first Indian wrestler to have won the gold medal in the under-23 World Championship in Spain in the 57 kg category last year. He stood on the podium already in the year before with the gold medal. That time it was the under-17 Junior World Championship, also held last year. Aman again broke through at the senior level, clinching a gold medal in the Asian Championship held last month in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Aman's beginning
Aman was born in a small village Birohar of Jhajar, Haryana. His father Sombir Sehrawat was a poor farmer and his mother Kamlesh was a housewife. Aman also has a younger sister. He was only 11 years old when he lost his parents, first, his father within a year he got admitted to Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi followed by his mother. Aman had gone into severe depression. His grandfather Mangeram Sehrawat was the man to have played a crucial role in bringing Aman back to normal life.
Wrestling and Sushil Kumar
Speaking to Parallel Sports from Chhatrasal, Aman reminded saying, "I was watching television, sitting idle at home. I watched Sushil Kumar, became highly inspired to have seen him on the podium with a silver medal in London Olympics, and decided I would also be a wrestler and stand on the podium with medals. The key reason behind getting admitted to Chhatrasal was that I dreamed of meeting my idol Sushil Kumar. One of my cousin brothers who practiced at the same place took initiative for my admission."
Aman sounded nostalgic while talking about the legendary Indian wrestler. He added, "Not only I met Sushil after starting training at Chhatrasal in 2014, but I had also trained several times with him, even played preparatory matches with him. He is my dream wrestler. I still can remember how he induced belief in me by showing me his Olympics medals and sayingthat I also will be able to bring laurels for the country. I still can remember after playing competitive matches with me how Sushil taught me to develop techniques, speed, and endurance. I know today he is also very happy after being aware of my success"
Aman also started learning the basics of the game from Sushil's mentor, coach, and father-in-law Satpal Singh. Presently, he trains under Lalit Kumar.
The desire and language
Aman is very much aware that he needs to speak fluently in English. He brooded saying, "I know the language very little. But as I will be traveling across the world to participate in several international competitions, I need to talk fluently. Before any major international tournaments, we get English teachers in the national preparatory camp. But that is not enough. I am planning to appoint a teacher who will teach and make me adept in speaking English."
The wrestler who joined Northern Railways only two months ago concluded saying, "After returning from Astana, I have not gone to my village. Now I am preparing for the men's World Championship. I have the desire to take blessings of my grandfather before the World Championship who looked after me and still inspires."
