The only girl in Bengal hockey in the national team for Junior World Cup

For the first time in the history of Bengal hockey, the women's team will be participating in the forthcoming National Games scheduled to be held next month in Goa.

Under the experienced coach of Sports Authority of India (SAI) S.K Mohanty Bengal women’s hockey team is set to achieve a landmark silently. For the first time in the history of Bengal hockey, the women's team will be participating in the forthcoming National Games scheduled to be held next month in Goa.

Bengal’s women’s hockey has already gained another significant achievement. That is Sujata Kujur, the only girl from Bengal hockey who is representing India. The 20-year-old midfielder was one of the key members of the gold-medal-winning junior Indian squad for the Junior Women Asia Cup, held in Japan in June this year.

Then Sujata ensured her place in the junior Indian squad again for the four-nation invitational tournament, held in Dusseldorf, Germany in August this year.

Now Sujata has been in the national preparatory camp in Bangalore for the forthcoming Junior World Cup scheduled to be held from 29th November to 10th December in Santiago, Chile.

The midfielder originally born and brought up in Sundargarh, Odisha came to SAI Kolkata after being selected in the National Centre of Excellence (NCE) three years ago and represented the state in the national championship this year for the first time. She also earned the best player's award in the match against Uttar Pradesh in the senior women's national championship.

Sujata, speaking over the phone from SAI, Bangalore said, "My immediate aim is to deliver my best in the junior World Cup. Then my aim will be to get into the senior women's squad. I want to become like Vandana Katariya.”

Vandana Katariya, a Padmasree awardee, was the top scorer for India in the Junior World Cup in 2013, and later on, Vandana was one of the bronze-medal-winning Indian women's squads in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

Along with Vandana, Sujata also follows Neha Gayal, the current Indian player who also is a midfielder.

Sujata’s father Dina Kujur is a farmer. Along with her mother Sujata has a brother and elder sister.

Commenting on her prospect Mohanty explained, "She can take huge workload. She has passing ability and she can play box-to-box. I believe she can be a regular member of the senior Indian women's squad within the next two years."

Sujata has another dream. She wants to ask her father to take a rest after getting a good salaried job.
