‘The sound of silence at the stadium was the greatest sound’: Labuschagne reveals chat with Head

Head and Labuschagne put on a match-winning 192 runs for the fourth wicket which helped Australia beat India by six wickets in the World Cup final.

Marnus Labuschagne reveals the ‘sound of silence’ at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday night at the end of the World Cup final was the most soothing sound for him and he enjoyed it most.

How can 1 lakh 32 thousand people be silent in an almost -packed stadium? “The sound of silence in India is a great sound because it means you are on top,” Labuschagne said after Australia won their sixth world cup title.

The Australians would have noticed it when the Indians were batting, particularly after the fall of Rohit Sharma and more importantly, when Virat Kohli was dismissed. During the chase the crowd looked bullish and roaring after the fall of Steven Smith that reduced Australia to 48 for 3.

Incidentally, the loudest screams probably came from the bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who had produced the best slower ball of the world cup- a wondrously timed off cutter. He howled thrice. The crowd were already losing their heads then and when the Bumrah visuals came shortly on the big screen, they began to hope and shout more.

But Head and Marnus would lead them to state of numbness. “Me and Heady (Travis Head) were discussing that we got them here now. Everything is quiet now. Just keep playing. Try to keep the crowd out of it.” And they did it.
