They are currently ranked 18th in the world doubles and no other Indian pair is ahead of them in the ranking.
Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha Mukherjee are the best Indian doubles pair now in the world of doubles girls. They are currently ranked 18th in the world doubles and no other Indian pair is ahead of them in the ranking. They have been participating in different international competitions for the last year and in the last 12 months they have acquired impressive results including the gold medal in National Games last year, the silver medal in Oman WTT, and the first-ever gold medal in Tunisia WTT.
When asked about the key factor behind their success, the 26-year-old paddler revealed that the unique combination of their rubbers and style has been the key factor behind their recent performance.
Ayhika stated, "My style is quite defensive while Sutirtha's game is aggressive. Secondly, I use anti-spin rubber on my backhand and pimples on the forehand. Sutirtha, despite trying to deliver an aggressive game style uses pimples on her forehand. So, this combination helps us to change the pace of the game, and variation in strokes. We have tricky rubbers but at the same time we can use it trickily."
Simultaneously, Ayhika attributed her understanding to Sutirtha as both are from Naihati and have played for a long time since their early age. Additionally, Ayhika has also joined Soumyadeep Roy's coaching center for the last one month where Sutirtha is an old student. Ayhika asserted, "We had a belief that we would be able to perform together."
Ayhika is now preparing for another impressive show in the forthcoming table tennis franchise league Ultimate Table Tennis, commencing on 13th July in Pune. In her third UTT, she will represent Dabang Delhi along with Sreeja Akuli, G.S Sathiyan, Anirban Ghosh, Barbora Balazova from Slovakia, and Jon Persson from Sweden. The former Commonwealth TT champion held UTT on a great height for their improvement.
She explained, "Getting the opportunity to take part in UTT has benefitted me a lot. I feel not only me, all Indian paddlers who are participating in the league are benefitted a lot through training with the world's top paddlers and guidance from renowned coaches. For example, we have a four-time Olympian and former World Champion coach from Serbia Slobodan Grujic, fondly named Bobo. His immense knowledge and demonstrating ability are helping me a lot."
The Asian games this year is going to be the second Asian Games for Ayhika. She still relishes her memorable match against top Chinese paddler in Jakarta Asian games in 2018. “She was world number one. I did not give up, fought neck-to-neck before losing, ” said Ayhika.
However she stressed the point that her focus will be on Asian Championships which is scheduled to take place before the Games.
