After settling in Hooghly Sanjib’s father sells fish in the local market also.
Sanjib Mondal is now a renowned name in Bhupati Nagar, Chakbazar, and Hooghly. He is the captain of the Unites Sports and the youngest of the three sons of Dulal Mondal, resides here with his parents and elder brothers.
Sanjib’s father was a fisherman in Balugan village, Odisha from where he shifted to West Bengal around 2007 due to professional reasons, when Sanjib was six years old. After settling in Hooghly Sanjib’s father sells fish in the local market also. Sanjib was inspired by his older brothers to play football since childhood and one of his older brothers Dipak Mondal took him to Bani Chakra Club, Bandel where he got his first coach Ashoke Mondal.
Sanjib's father Dulal Mondal had to struggle a lot to survive financially. He remembered, “I also helped my father in selling fish at the market earlier. We could not have nutritious food as my father somehow managed to run a family that consisted of five members. I had to walk 40 to 45 minutes to reach the Club for practice.”
Ashoke Mondal looked after Sanjiba along with providing training. During his tutelage, Sanjib had the taste of nutritious food for the first time. While playing for Bani Chakra in a local tournament Sanjib was presented a bicycle for the best player's award. He added, "The bicycle gave me quite a relief. I did not have to walk the distance anymore. I used to go to training via bicycle."
Sanjib finally caught the eyes of Debashish Das, the manager of United Sports, and got a ladder to prosper in his career by starting with the under-15 team of United Sports. Next year he joined Pathachakra, the other team of United Sports which took part in the Kolkata Premier B-division team and became champions.
After the season Sanjib met with an accident during practice at the local ground and his ligament had to be operated. After a successful operation, Sanjib joined the United Sports Senior team in 2019-20.
His primary aim is now to promote the team to the elite group of I-league where he wants to perform such that he is selected in an ISL team. Like others, he also dreams to represent India and the big teams of Kolkata. Sanjib added, “I am a fan of Sergio Busquets and try to learn from his matches and training videos. In India, I was inspired by Lalkamal Bhowmick.”
Sanjib lamented saying, "I have renovated my house with my small earnings a couple of years ago. But I need a job desperately. I am grateful to Nabab Bhattacharya and other officials of the club who has taken care of me. My operation would not have been possible if Nabab sir had not come forward with financial help."
Sanjib dreams of playing in ISL mainly to earn a worthy amount of money. He concluded, "I need to have desirable earnings which will help me to run the family comfortably. I can ask my father to take a rest."
