The youngest female fencer from Kashmir is silently transforming other girls into sports through the less-popular game

"Currently I am a player. I have so many dreams as a player. But after saying goodbye to the game I must be involved in encouraging and promoting fencing to make it popular in Jammu & Kashmir."

She is Shreya Gupta from Jammu & Kashmir. She plays fencing and has chosen Saber Group which is the fastest one among the three categories of fencing. Shreya might be 18 years old but she already has achieved the best sports award of Kashmir, 'Sher-e-Kashmir' after having acquired three international bronze medals (Asian Championship and two Commonwealth Championships), 16 gold medals, four silver medals, and eight bronze medals so far in the national level.

But these are all statistics only which can make one proud of her. More to her story is that Shreya has been silently inspiring the girls in her city (proper Jammu) through this less-popular game. After watching Sreya's success several girls, especially little girls are getting interested. Speaking to Parallel Sports from Sanskar Dham Sports Academy, Ahmedabad, Shreya said, "I feel good to watch many more little girls in my city coming to the fencing center at the J & K Council. I also enjoy when I hear the coaches telling the girls about my success and then the parents are sending their daughters to learn fencing or any other game."

Shreya has plans to promote and encourage fencing in a bigger way in her state in the future. She added, "Currently I am a player. I have so many dreams as a player. But after saying goodbye I must be involved in encouraging and promoting fencing to make it popular in Jammu & Kashmir." The girl expressed a sign of relief saying, "Recently a new sports policy has been issued by the state government where medal-winning fencers at the national level can also get jobs. The financial support to fencing is needed."

Incidentally, fighting was always Shreya's favorite topic. She revealed, "I did not have a sister. Rather I have one brother. I played with him in childhood, watching different fighting cartoons." The childhood fascination might have transpired into Shreya's mind as she started Taekwondo while her brother Shivalik started fencing.

Shreya had medals in the national level competitions in taekwondo. Still, inspired by primarily the gears and dresses Shreya decided to shift from taekwondo to fencing. That was in 2013.

Shreya's idol fencer is Hungary's Aron Szilagyi and she had the opportunity to get his wishes during an exposure trip to Hungary. At the same time, Shreya follows Bhavani Devi, the only female fencer to have participated in the Olympics. She revealed, "Aron gave me some valuable pieces of advice asking me not to both about the losses, but rather to analyze the defeats and always become positive before the upcoming matches."

Shreya, being included in the Target Olympics Podium (TOP) scheme is now preparing for the senior national championship at Sanskar Dham Sports Academy at Ahmedabad and if she can finish within the top four then she will earn qualification for the Asian Games this year. Then she has World Championship this year before the Games.

Shreya dreams of a medal in the Olympics to place herself in the elite group of sports personalities in the country.
