The history of Ranji Trophy has featured several memorable moments over the years. Umar Nazir Mir’s sensational spell against Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy can be called the latest to join the list. 

Jammu & Kashmir’s lanky pacer, standing tall at 6 ft 4 inches, ripped through Mumbai’s famed batting line-up in their first innings. Big names like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Tamore, and Shivam Dube all fell victim to his deadly bowling. 

Umar hails from the Pulwama area of South Kashmir and from a middle-class family. His father works as a lumber dealer. According to Cricket Next, Umar's road to first-class cricket was supported by his father's support, which originated from playing 'mohalla' cricket. 

Umar had to cross many hurdles before representing his state in a variety of national championships. This also included a difficult time during the closure in Jammu and Kashmir following the cancellation of Article 370. Umar had no communication with his family members after the 'lockdown' prevailed over the state for several months. Still, the 31-year-old fast bowler did not give up, dedicating themself to his sport and even participating in training camps organized by renowned India bowler Irfan Pathan according to reports by Indian Express.

He has been quietly making a name for himself in domestic cricket. With 57 first-class matches under his belt, he has picked up 138 wickets at an average of 29.12. His best performance was a stunning 6/53 against Services last year. 

This season, Umar has again been on fire. He has captured 15 wickets so far in only three Ranji Trophy matches at an incredible average of 9.81 and with an economy rate of 2.64 and strike rate of 22.27. 

Meanwhile, despite his domestic success, Umar has not yet bagged an IPL contract. He has been in multiple auctions but has not been picked up, something that might change after this season.
