United Sports Club’s new effort to produce footballers in a ‘football hub’ called Beldanga

United Sports SC is planning to build up their under-13 squad for the under-13 I-League, mostly from Beldanga project.

The distance from Kolkata to the village via train is around three-and-half hours. It can be said apparently that like most of the villages in Bengal, football is also popular in this village, named Beldanga.

But it might be difficult to assume that a local football tournament (Ramjan Ali and Majibur Rahaman Memorial Knock-out tournament) played between eight teams (mostly from neighboring districts) witnesses nearly 10 thousand football fanatic spectators!

The stadium has a capacity of five to six thousand spectators while giant screens are installed outside the stadium for football lovers who even ride on the trees to watch matches!

The competition organizers, Barua Jubak Sangha claim they get nearly Rs 5 Lakh from the gate sale out of the total budget for the tournament Rs 15 Lakh!

Barua Jubak Sangha, the most popular club in Beldanga has been playing an anchor role in promoting the huge craze on the game in Beldanga for almost the last three decades.

Now, United Sports Club has taken a drive to explore and bring up footballers of the future.

An association with Barua Jubak Sangha has been made by United SC and an extensive training program kicked off at the Jubak Sangha Club's stadium on 12th March this year.

Jubak Sangha secretary Udjar Ali revealed, "We are grateful to Nabab Bhattacharya, the United Sports SC director. Coming forward to associate with us has created huge interest among the parents of the villagers. They have learned to believe that their sons, if potential, can obtain the opportunity to play the game in the mainstream of Indian football one day. Before the start of this training program, our club had 26 students. Now in the last four months, the number of students has reached 102. We have age groups starting from five-and-half-year-old footballers to under-19.”

Jubak Sangha has also a hostel alongside the stadium where 23 footballers are presently residing. Twenty-one of these 23 are from other districts and states like Manipur, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Subodh Mahato is the chief coach of the academy who is presently in Punjab to complete his C-license coaching degree while three other coaches, Sayanta Samanta, Dibyendu Roy, and Debashish Roy work under the observation of Mahato.

The coaching module has been set by Steve Herbots, the Belgian coach of United Sports SC.

Sayanta Samanta divulged, “Steve has come here several days to train and to educate us also. He has set the training module. We follow it and send reports to Steve every day about training and players' assessment."

According to Udjar, "We also provide training free of cost for the potential kids who come from financially underprivileged families. We are also thankful to United SC regarding the issue as Bhattacharya has promised he would come forward with financial help if needed for any of our potential kids.”

United Sports SC is planning to build up their under-13 squad for the under-13 I-League, mostly from their Beldanga project. A few of the footballers from under 17 and 19 have already graduated to United SC's reserve team for raining following their impressive performance.
