After a gap of 10 years, once again United Sports is all set to ensure a berth in the elite I-League for the next season. The team defying major odds registered a crucial 2-1 victory against Shillong Lajong FC on Monday at Kalyani Stadium. The home team that needed to win the match desperately found the winner finally in the 80th minute through an excellent header from Amit Tudu.

With 11 points from 5 matches so far, United Sports can be the group topper with another win in their concluding tie against Diamond Rockstar FC and enter the elite-I-League as the only team from this group. Diamond Rockstar FC has not yet gathered any points.

The major obstruction the home team had to face on the day was referring. It was surprising that despite the participation of a team from North-East referees from the same region were assigned to officiate the all-important tie on Monday. The result was also vivid as several decisions against United Sports were given. Even impartial referring caused anger among around fifteen hundred fans of United Sports who attended the match on the day. A few of the United Sports footballers were seen yellow cards.

The club's chairman Nabab Bhattacharya commented, "It was unfortunate to see most of the referee's decisions today had gone against us. Even we were denied of genuine spot-kick also." Bhattacharya happy with his boys' performance added, "There is not much difference in quality among the Indian boys. Even if we play any ISL team you will not find much difference. Only quality foreign footballers are making the difference."

United Sports took part last in the elite-I-League in 2013-14. The team had Ranty Martins, Belo Rajaq, and Eric Brown and the coach was Elco Satorie.
