Most of the EB fans plan to boycott upcoming Derby

Before the upcoming ISL derby, scheduled on 25th February at the Salt Lake Stadium, Parallel Sports spoke to the fans of both the giants

The traditional Kolkata derby between Indian East Bengal and Mohun Bagan creates the frenzy over the years. The fans of both the Kolkata giants wait for this match every year. However the scenario before the upcoming Kolkata derby in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) has changed this season. East Bengal is languishing at the 9th position in the league table while their traditional rival is placed within the top six following the team last's victory.

East Bengal has not been able to deliver performance in last couple of seasons and as its reflection the die-hard fans seem to be in agitating mood. They have been trying to boycott their team's matches. Factually, number of East Bengal fans at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan has been gradually reducing. Mohun Bagan supporters, comparatively relieved of their team's performance this season, become upset with their favorite team's inability to become the champion of this League that has not yet started relegation system surprisingly.

Before the upcoming ISL derby, scheduled on 25th February at the Salt Lake Stadium, Parallel Sports spoke to the fans of both the giants to know whether they will be present at the Salt Lake Stadium to cheer up their respective teams as usual. It can be guessed that Mohun Bagan fans will not turn away from watching the derby. But the curiosity is there for the whole football fraternity whether East Bengal fans who have made revolt against the club's top brass on their social media pages, are present at the stadium on the derby day.

“Earlier, 2000-2500 people used to go to the field to watch the watch together. But now the performance of the club and the management of the club is so bad that 80% of the people in the club don't go to watch matches anymore.”- Ravi Shankar Sen, EBRP fan club member

“The real reason we are boycotting the East Bengal match is because of the club officials. They change sponsors every year. The performance in the match is very poor. Earlier we used to go 150 to 200 people from Halisahar to watch the match. None of us will go this year. Earlier there were 35000 East Bengal fans in the stadium But now only 1.2% will go.” - Sumon Saha, a member of the Halishahar EBRP fan club

“We go to the field and watch the game so that the team can win but there is no winning mentality in the team. We don't want to go to the game for the management of the club. They are doing so badly that the desire to go watch the game is gone. Earlier, 40-50 people of us used to go from Banga Chaptala to watch the match. But this time none of us will go.”- Chinmoy Biswas, a member of Banga EBRP Fan Club

"We will not go to see the game until Debbrata Sarkar leaves the club. Ever since the inception of the ISL, club officials have been corrupt. Playing with players who are not eligible to play for East Bengal Club. Losing seven derbies has never seen a day like this before. So we will not go to see any match just because of the derby. Earlier, 400-500 people from our fan club used to go to see stadium games. But this time not a single one of us will go to watch the game. Earlier many fans used to come to the stadium to watch the match but now only one percent of them will come to watch the match.” - Subhamoy Maitra,a member of the Banga EBRP fan club

“We will go to watch the game from our fan club this year as well. We go to the game because we love the club. But the name Mohun Bagan is very painful for us. But because we love the club, as long as they play against the red and yellow jersey, we will go to the field and support our club. About 200 of us used to go to watch the match.” - Hirak Chakraborty, Panihati Mohun Bagan fan club member

"I don't care much about the name ATK." 50 of us will go to watch the match again this time. I don't think Mohun Bagan supporters can ever be less. But the excitement about the derby may have subsided a lot. Because the fans already know the result of the derby match. I never think Mohun Bagan fans will give up going to the ground.” – Ayan Bhaduri, a member of the Panihati Mohun Bagan fan club

“They will also go to watch the game from our fan club. But the performance of our team is not good at all. Not a single good forward on the team. we still support our club. I also want the ATK name to be removed. But the performance of the team must be fixed first. I think that's why many people don't go to the field to watch the game. Earlier, Mohun Bagan fans were in the stadium but now 30-40% of the fans are not seen in the match.” - Bimal Kumar Mondal, a member of Salt Lake Mohun Bagan Fan Club
