US therapist found guilty of supplying drugs

The 2020 law was named after the Russian whistle-blower Grigory Rodchenkov.

Eric Lira is a self-described naturopathic doctor, based in EL Paso. He has been involved in supplying misbranded versions of performance-enhancing drugs to athletes before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Lira is said to have obtained the drug from Central and South America and brought them into the U.S. before supplying them to two Olympics athletes.

It has been learned that he supplied the drugs to Nigerian Sprinter Blessing Okjagbare also. Blessing Okjagbare was a gold medallist in the 200m run at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Nigerian athlete tested positive for human growth hormone on July 2021 and was suspended from Tokyo Olympics which was scheduled to be held from 31st July 2021 due to Covid19 pandemic. The details of the second athlete could not be traced.

Lira was arrested on January 2022 while distributing drugs. He was accused under a new US Law, Rodchenkov Law, introduced when Russia's state-backed Olympic doping scandal occurred. Lira became the first man to be accused under this law.

The new law, which was introduced in 2020, was named after the Russian whistle-blower Grigory Rodchenkov. This law enables US authorities to prosecute individuals involved in an international doping fraud conspiracy.
