In the last 20 years, since the beginning of BBC's journey, Jagdish received only Rs 40 lakhs for the club building from Sahara Group of Industries and Rs 3 lakh with the Dronacharya award.
Monday has not been unusual for him. He started the day as usual, doing what he does every day. He took his students to the stadium early morning, ran with them, did some warm-up exercises, gave them motivational speeches, and returned to the club which is already called, 'the Cuba of India', the Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC).
He had to undergo a bypass surgery in February this year. Still, even at the age of 62 Dronacharya boxing coach Jagdish Singh, the founder of BBC does not bother to train with his students, accompanying them in the ring while training with pads on his hands.
Nevertheless, amidst his usual business since early morning, the day of auspicious Guru Purnima on Monday was a little bit different as Jagdish had already received several messages from his students, asking for blessings from him. Speaking from Bhiwani on Monday, Jagdish smilingly said, "My Olympian students also have sent messages asking for blessing and it might be a coincidence that since today morning I also have been quite nostalgic, remembering them."
Jagdish was a boxing coach for the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Sonepat. His gems like Vijender, Akhil Kumar, Dinesh Kumar, and Vikash Krishan Yadav were training there under his tutelage. A trip to Hungary to attend an advanced course on boxing in 2001 became a turning point for Jagdish before he introduced BBC in 2003.
He said, "I met their world champion Istvan Kovacs or Ko-Ko. I even accompanied him in training with pads on my hands. I made a complete video recording of his training. Then I went to meet Hungary's legendary boxer Lelo Pov. He was seriously ill at that time, lying in bed. Still, I talked to him and gained a lot of things about boxing from him. The main thing I brought with me from Hungary was confidence, the belief that I also can produce boxers of international quality and initiated for building BBC."
In the last 20 years, since the beginning of BBC's journey, Jagdish received only Rs 40 lakhs for the club building from Sahara Group of Industries and Rs 3 lakh with the Dronacharya award. This apart, the coach had invested completely from his pocket, breaking fixed deposits, and mortgaging his own land. The little bit of relief he obtained when OGQ presented him with a modern gym recently.
Jagdish has not stopped his job. In 2023, more than 10 of his students including girls and boys in different age groups are in the Indian camps. He now is on a mission to reshape his best female student Nitu Ghanghas, the 2023 world champion in the 48Kg category.
The bout in the 48kg category has been rejected in the forthcoming World Championship, Asian Games as well as in the Paris Olympics. So, Nitu is on the way to reshaping her body in the 54kg category.
Jagdish revealed, "She had not yet earned qualification for the Asian Games in the first selection trials. I am waiting for two more trials and hope she will finally ensure her berth in the national team for the Asian Games. Now I want an international medal from any of my female students."
Jagdish does not wish for anything more. "Whenever people appreciate any of my students and say he or she is a student of Jagdish Singh, I become the happiest person."
