Vinesh Phogat creates history, reaches final in Olympics

She finally locked her Paris Olympics quota in the women's 50kg category by reaching the final at the Asian Olympic qualifier.

Vinesh Phogat inscribed her name in the list of most amazing comebacks in Indian sport on Tuesday. It can be said that never in the history of Indian Olympic sport has been a turnaround like Vinesh Phogat.

She reached the final of the women’s 50kg category in the ongoing Olympics in Paris on Tuesday, trouncing Cuba’s Yusleylis Guzman Lopez 5-0.

Vinesh, the cousin sister of Geeta and Babita Phogat had to overcome stiff challenges since January last year, launching continuous protests against then WFI president Brij Bhushan, accusing him of sexual abuse and intimidation. Then Vinesh suffered from a severe knee injury in August and failed to take part in the Hangzhou Asian Games.

She finally locked her Paris Olympics quota in the women's 50kg category by reaching the final at the Asian Olympic qualifier. She beat Laura Ganikyzy in the semifinal. WFI said that they would not conduct Olympic trials and the wrestlers who won the quota would compete in Paris.

Vinesh is the only Indian female grappler to have reached final of Olympics so far.
