Violence between Pro-Shakib and anti-Shakib groups before Bangladesh-South Africa first Test

Shakib lives in New York and has not stepped foot on Bangladesh soil since May.

Star Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan is still the 'talk-of-the-town' across Bangladesh despite the fact that he does not live in the country.

Two groups, one is pro-Shakib Al Hasan and the other is anti-Shakib Al Hasan, reportedly got involved in violence outside the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka on Sunday ahead of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa.

The pro-Shakib group is called Shakibians who reportedly chanted slogans and demanded that the star all-rounder be included in the Test team. The group was however chased by the anti-Shakib group and the violence started at a time when the South African team were training at the stadium.

According to a leading Bangladesh newspaper, one person was detained.

Shakib was picked in the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against South Africa, but following a strong objection from Mirpur Chhatra Janata, a student body, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had to remove his name from the squad. Incidentally, Shakib also confirmed, having observed the political situation, that he would not be travelling to Bangladesh for this Test.

Significantly, Shakib lives in New York and has not stepped foot on Bangladesh soil since May.
