Rio Olympic bronze medalist revealed that it is not the first time that the athletes have approached to file an FIR against Brij Bhusan Singh.
The sit-in-protest of the wrestlers has reached the 10th day. The grapplers are now eager to explain the allegations levied against them by WFI president Bri Bhushan Singh who has often asked, through media, why they remained silent so long.
In an interview with Indian Express on Wednesday, Rio Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik said, “In 2012 half a dozen junior athletes approached the Lucknow police to file an FIR, against him, alleging for sexual harassment. Brij Bhushan, utilizing his influence, put an end to the matter within 24 hours.”
Sakshi remembered the incident of 2014 when the physiotherapist, Paramjeet Malik, whose wife is also a wrestler, raised his voice against these disorders and spoke to other coaches. He was working with Geeta Phogat at that time in the National Camp. But Malik, along with his wife, were removed from the camp and neither he nor his wife could make a return to the camp after this incident.
Paramjeet speaking to Indian Express said that he had appeared before the oversight committee twice and narrated the incident of 2014 to the panel. He said, “I was working with Geeta Phogat in the National Camp in 2014. The cadet wrestler broke down in front of me and my wife, Suman, about the alleged sexual harassment by Brij Bhushan Singh.”
Sakshi added saying that they were afraid of Brij Bhusan’s power and they apprehended, as junior athletes, that their career might come to an end if they had spoken. “That is why we were quite so long. We wanted to wrestle and save our career,” stated Sakshi.
The protesting wrestlers are also deeply annoyed with the silence of five-time World champion boxer MC Mary Kom as well as IOA president P.T Usha on the issue.
