Will Rohit and Virat participate in domestic cricket now?

2013 was the last time Virat Kohli played domestic cricket, while Rohit Sharma's match for Mumbai came in 2018.

Gautam Gambhir has already sent messages towards the present Indian team's two most decorated batsmen, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The message is simple: Both batsmen must return to domestic cricket to regain their form.

Gambhir revealed during the media conference after the disastrous defeat, "I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket. That is how important domestic cricket needs to be. Not only one game. If they are available and committed to playing red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. If you don't give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players that you want,"

However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, these two batsmen have earned themselves the benefit of the doubt. For years, they have won Indian cricket team matches in all formats.

Everyone wanted them to play in the Duleep Trophy last year. They had played 3 matches from July to August, and everyone wanted them to feature in a couple of matches before facing Bangladesh at home. But both wished to rest, and BCCI granted them that. Well, the results are out, and they aren’t great. Since then, Rohit Sharma averages below 11 and Virat Kohli below 23.

2013 was the last time Virat Kohli played domestic cricket, while Rohit Sharma's match for Mumbai came in 2018.

Both have made it clear they are not retiring. But given their form, the selectors are not sure they slot in. The only remedy to that is for them to feature in the Ranji Trophy this season.

It won’t guarantee them scoring heaps of runs again, but playing red-ball after a 6-month gap can’t be good for a player to succeed in Test cricket, especially at their age.
