Cummings’ Late Equaliser Keeps ISL Title Race Wide Open For MBSG

The Salt Lake Stadium once again witnessed the magic and madness of the Kolkata Derby as Mohun Bagan Super Giant snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against East Bengal FC in a high-voltage Indian Super League clash on Sunday night.

With the ISL 2025-26 season being played in a single-leg round-robin format without playoffs, the derby carried enormous title implications. The draw leaves both Kolkata giants level on 23 points, setting up a thrilling final-day battle for the championship.

East Bengal looked the sharper side in the opening half and came close to taking the lead in the 20th minute when Anton Søjberg’s deflected effort struck the post after a midfield error from Mohun Bagan. Minutes later, Bipin Singh broke through on goal after a brilliant pass from Jeakson Singh, but Alberto Rodríguez produced a crucial recovery challenge to deny him.

Mohun Bagan responded through the creativity of Liston Colaco and Anirudh Thapa, but East Bengal’s disciplined defence, marshalled by Anwar Ali, ensured the match remained goalless at halftime.

The contest exploded into life in the closing stages. Mohun Bagan coach made an attacking quadruple substitution in the 80th minute, introducing Jason Cummings, Deepak Tangri, Robinho, and Mehtab Singh in search of a breakthrough.

However, it was East Bengal who struck first in the 85th minute. Miguel Figueira threaded a brilliant through-ball to Edmund Lalrindika, who calmly slotted past Vishal Kaith to send the Red and Gold supporters into celebration.

But the drama was far from over.

Just four minutes later, Mohun Bagan found their equaliser from a corner. Liston Colaco delivered a dangerous ball into the near post and substitute Jason Cummings rose brilliantly to flick home the leveller, silencing the East Bengal faithful and rescuing a crucial point for the Mariners.

The closing moments were chaotic and intense. Jamie Maclaren nearly completed the comeback for Mohun Bagan, but Prabhsukhan Gill produced a sensational save from point-blank range. Tempers then boiled over, with East Bengal goal-scorer Lalrindika receiving a late red card after an altercation in stoppage time.

The title race now heads into a dramatic finale. East Bengal remain slightly ahead due to their superior goal difference and will likely secure the championship with a win over Inter Kashi. Mohun Bagan, meanwhile, must beat SC Delhi and hope their rivals slip up.

Adding another layer of intrigue, Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC remain just one point behind the Kolkata duo, ensuring the ISL title race is set for a blockbuster finish.
