Sooryavanshi Eyes Tendulkar Record with India Debut at 15

At just 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is nearing a historic opportunity. As he is shortlisted for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland, with selectors closely tracking his rapid rise. If picked, the teenager could become one of the youngest players to represent the country at the senior level.

A source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed the development, stating, “He is in contention for the Ireland tour, and the selectors have shortlisted his name along with several others.”

The Ireland series, expected to take place in June 2026, will likely feature a second-string Indian squad as the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, looks to test bench strength ahead of a packed international calendar.

Reports also suggest that Sooryavanshi is being considered for India’s tour of Zimbabwe later this year, further indicating the management’s long-term investment in the young batter.

The buzz around Sooryavanshi comes on the back of a sensational start to Indian Premier League 2026, where he has lit up the tournament for Rajasthan Royals. His explosive knocks, a 78 off 26 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a 52 off 17 balls versus Chennai Super Kings, and a 39 off just 14 balls against Mumbai Indians, have pushed his name firmly into national contention.

Even IPL chairman Arun Dhumal backed the youngster publicly, writing, “This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for Team India as the youngest given his performances. It is rare to see someone so talented at such a young age.”

Former India cricketers, including Irfan Pathan and Anil Kumble, have also echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that the teenager appears ready for the international stage.

Currently, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record as India’s youngest men’s international debutant, having played his first match at 16 years and 205 days. Overall, the national record belongs to Shafali Verma, who debuted for India at just 15 years, 7 months, and 27 days.

India’s international calendar is packed in the coming months. After the Ireland tour in June 2026, the team will travel to England for a white-ball series starting on 1st July 2026, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs. Senior players are expected to return for that assignment, making the Ireland and Zimbabwe tours crucial opportunities for emerging talents like Sooryavanshi.

For now, all eyes remain on the selectors, as Indian cricket stands on the brink of potentially unveiling its next teenage prodigy on the global stage.
